When are the winners of the Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award announced?

  • The winner will be contacted in December.
  • The Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award is presented at the annual meeting of the Beacon Society in New York City in January.
  • Winners do not have to be present at the award ceremony.
    • Each Award consists of a:
      • Certificate and a check for $221
      • One-year Serpentine Muse and The Baker Street Journal subscription to the recipient or a school/organization of the recipient's choice.
      • Summary of the winner's activity on the Beacon Society website
Each January, the Beacon Society issues an annual Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award, which recognizes a project that successfully introduced young people to the Sherlock Holmes stories.  Since 2004, the Beacon Society has bestowed Beacon Awards on thirteen programs, which focused on elementary, middle and high school students, libraries, museums, theaters, and study guides for students. The Beacon Award is given out each year, which includes a certificate and cash award for the recipient.

Any person, society or other organization is eligible to win.  Nominees for the award must have made a significant contribution to exposing young people to the stories of Sherlock Holmes.

​Jan Stauber received the Beacon Society's first Beacon Award. For over 10 years, Jan visited seventh and eighth grade classrooms to educate the students on Sherlock Holmes.

What is the Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award?


  • An award of recognition for exemplary educational experiences and other significant activities exposing young people to the Sherlock Holmes stories.
  • One award is granted each year.

Who can win a Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award?

  • A person, scion society, or another organization can win a Beacon Award.
  • They must have made a significant contribution to exposing young people to the stories of Sherlock Holmes.
  • Previous nominees (or winners) can be nominated again for:
    • Projects that have been nominated but not won
    • New projects

Nominations for a Susan Z. Diamond Beacon Award?

  • Beacon Award nominations are open for submission all year with the closing date November 15 of each calendar year set for evaluations and voting.
  • The nomination form asks for detailed information about the nominee and his/her/their activities, so we can compare the achievements of nominees. Once you complete the form, email it to Dan Andriacco.  
  • Note that the Awards Task Group has the right to reject a nomination that is frivolous, incomplete, or otherwise deemed inappropriate.
  • All nominations become the property of The Beacon Society and may be published on the Beacon website.

  • Members of the Beacon Society who ask to review final nominations
