Fortescue Scholarship Honours Program
Commemorating a Quiz
n the June, 1964 edition of the Baker Street Journal (BSJ), S. Tupper Bigelow and Robert H. Schutz solicited prizes for a new Sherlockian quiz prepared by Elliot Kimball. The September, 1964 edition of the BSJ carried the following:
“Enclosed with this issue of the Journal you will find a copy of Elliot Kimball’s Sherlockian Quiz, recommended by Bob Schutz, BSI, its promoter, as one of the most remarkable quizzes ever penned."
Prizes were given to winners. The quiz was included in the envelope containing the JOURNAL issue. Sherlockians who participated in the contest used the adjectives, “devilish,” “fiendish,” “frustrating,” and “thought-provoking.”
The quiz had 100 questions and, without today’s electronic version of the Canon to do a word search, tested those who attempted it.
To commemorate the 60th anniversary of the quiz, The Beacon Society will re-offer it as part of the Fortescue Scholarship exam program. The Kimball quiz will serve as a compliment to the annual re-certification exam the Society has been issuing since 2020.
You may receive a copy of the quiz by emailing me at [email protected], or using the form below to request the quiz.
Those who successfully pass the exam will receive a special certificate of accomplishment from the Society. All decisions of the judges are final, but they are very flexible in their grading.
Thanks to Peter Blau and Rich Krisciunas for their assistance in getting this completed.

The Beacon Society is excited to announce we have established an Annual Re-Certification Exam for those who have completed the first 3 exams.
The questions are not-overly difficult, and continue the primary purpose of the Program, which is to encourage increased familiarity with the Canon and the Sherlockian world.
To receive the Re-Certification Exam, please send me an email ([email protected]) requesting the Exam.
Once you complete the fillable Exam, you can return to us for grading.
Those who successfully complete the Exam will receive a certificate.
You can use whatever resources you have (a copy of the Canon, the internet, etc) to help in completing the Exam.
YOU MUST COMPLETE THE EXAMS IN ORDER (YOU CANNOT REQUEST THE RE-CERTIFICATION EXAM UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THE FIRST 3 EXAMS).

The Fortescue Scholarship Honours Program was designed by the late Robert W. Hahn, BSI, and Helen Heinrich, BSI, for the edification and delight of those Sherlockians who have a scholarly interest in the Canon.
Hahn got the program’s name from “The Adventure of the Three Students,” which involves the theft of the answer for the scholarship competition.

The program was developed by the Watsonians and is now administered by the Beacon Society.
The Watsonians was a Chicago-based scion of the Baker Street Irregulars, whose primary mission was to foster an increased appreciation of Dr. John H. Watson and his writings.
The Honours Program is a three-part endeavor, beginning with the Elementary Tripos.
Successful completion of this exam earns the applicant the B.S.S. degree—Baccalaureatus Scientia in Sherlockiana.
The B.S.S. degree holder may then apply for the Advanced Tripos Exam.
Successful completion of this exam results in the A.M.S. degree—Artium Magister in Sherlockiana.
A.M.S. degree holders may either prepare a paper on any aspect of the Sacred Writings or complete a third exam.
Upon approval of the paper by the Scholarship Board or successful completion of the exam, the applicant is granted his or her Doctorate in Sherlockiana—the Sh.D. degree.
In each instance, the successful candidate receives a handsome certificate attesting to their right to use the initials for the degree granted.
The Tripos questions are not inordinately difficult, nor is the scoring rigid or pedantic.
Each Tripos is an open-book exam.
The primary purpose of the program is to encourage increased familiarity with the Canon.
Also there is no charge to participate in the program.
We encourage you to join this elite group of approximately one hundred Sherlockian scholars (See all of our honourees at the bottom of this page).
To receive the first exam, please fill out information below (Exam Request Form) and return to us.
We will email you the the first exam.
Once you complete the fillable exam, you can return to us for grading (Exam submittal Form).
Once you pass the first exam, we will distribute the second exam to you, and so forth, until you complete all three exams.
If you have completed the first 3 exams, you may request a recertification exam we will be issuing each year.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS PROGRAM IS BASED ON THE HONORS SYSTEM, JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL FORTESCUE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IN THE CANON.
PLEASE DO NOT SHARE THIS EXAM WITH ANYONE ELSE. AND PLEASE DO YOUR OWN WORK.
