STORY OUTLINE
- Holmes and Watson are at home at 221B Baker Street. Describe the setting in detail. Holmes and Watson might be having a conversation. Watson might be reading while Holmes is completing a chemical experiment or playing the violin.
- Holmes and Watson are visited by a person who needs Holmes’s help in solving a case. Describe the client in detail.
- Holmes looks at the client and surprises the client by telling him or her things about the client’s life (i.e. I see you are a left handed teacher from America). Holmes then explains how he figured out these things.
- The client tells Holmes about the case. Make sure Holmes and Watson ask the client questions as he or she explains the problem to Holmes.
- Holmes asks the client a few additional questions to make sure he has all the details about the case.
- Holmes, possibly with Watson, begins investigating the case. Describe the setting in detail. Let us get to see Victorian London.
- Holmes collects clues to help solve the mystery. He might interview people or interrogate a suspect. This is the center of your story. Again, make sure you describe the people Holmes encounters. One of the delights of reading Sherlock Holmes is getting to know the secondary characters.
- Watson can tell that Holmes is on the right track to solving the case. Watson can’t figure it out himself.
- Holmes solves the case. If there is a crime involved, Holmes helps catch the criminal. He may have assistance from Scotland Yard. You might want to use a traditional inspector from the Holmes stories such as Inspector Lestrade or come up with your own. If you use Lestrade or a different inspector from the canon of Arthur Conan Doyle stories, make sure you describe him in the same way he is in the original stories.
- Holmes tells Watson how he solved the case. This usually occurs back in Baker Street.
